A Model Day at 6–8 Months (Giornata tipo 6–8 mesi)
Milk is still the backbone of the day at this age — breast milk or formula comes first, and meals are for learning, not replacing. A typical day has two real meals (lunch and dinner) and, from around 6 months, a small fruit merenda. Everything below is qualitative: your baby decides how much, you decide what and when.
The shape of the day
- On waking — a full milk feed.
- Mid-morning — nothing, or a few sips of water if it's hot. No snacks needed yet.
- Lunch (around midday) — the main meal: a vegetable cream, a cereal cream, a protein, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
- Afternoon merenda — a fruit puree, or plain whole yogurt with fruit puree stirred in.
- Dinner (early evening) — a lighter version of lunch: vegetable cream with cereal, and from 6 months a second protein source on most days.
- Before bed — a full milk feed.
What goes in the lunch bowl
The classic Italian first lunch is built in the bowl, one component at a time:
- Vegetable base — a cream of one or two vegetables (carrot, zucchini, pumpkin, green beans), passed fine at 6 months and left slightly thicker by 8.
- Cereal — cream of rice or corn-and-tapioca at 6 months; semolino and first pastina from around 7–8 months.
- Protein — from 6 months: pureed meat, white fish, or well-cooked egg; lentils and chickpeas passed fine work too. Rotate sources across the week.
- Fat — a drizzle of raw extra virgin olive oil stirred in at the end, every day.
Introduce one new food at a time, a few days apart, so any reaction is easy to spot.
A worked day (with recipes from our library)
- Lunch: Carrot Puree or Zucchini Puree as the vegetable base with a spoonful of cream of rice, then First Chicken and Carrot Cream as the protein component on chicken days.
- Merenda: Pear Puree, or Plain Yogurt with Fruit Puree.
- Dinner: Vegetable Broth with semolino and a passed vegetable; First Pastina in Brodo on pastina days.
Textures at this age
- 6 months: everything smooth and spoonable — purees run slowly off the spoon, no lumps.
- 7–8 months: thicker creams and the first very soft lumps; pastina well cooked. Watch your baby's chewing movements before moving textures up.
What to avoid
No salt, no sugar, no honey before 12 months, no cow's milk as a drink before 12 months (yogurt and ricotta are fine), no whole nuts, grapes or other choking shapes. Water in small sips with meals is fine from 6 months.
