A gentle day for tiny tastes.

A Gentle Day at 6-8 Months

Milk first, two small meals, a fruit merenda and plenty of room for funny faces, slow spoonfuls and your baby's own pace.

The day of

At this age, milk still holds the day together. Food is practice: touching, smelling, tasting and slowly learning what a spoon is for. Two small meals and a fruit merenda are plenty of newness.

What today is really for

Learning, not finishing

A lick, a funny face and one swallowed spoonful can all be a successful meal. The bowl does not need to come back empty.

  1. On waking

    around

A full milk feed. No need to rush past the part your baby already knows.

  2. Mid-morning

    around

Usually nothing. A few sips of water are fine with meals; there is no need to invent a snack because the clock says so.

  3. Lunch (around midday)

    around

The main little bowl of the day, built one familiar component at a time:

    • Vegetable base - a cream of one or two vegetables (carrot, zucchini, pumpkin, green beans), passed fine at 6 months, slightly thicker by 8.
    • Cereal - cream of rice or corn-and-tapioca at 6 months; semolino and first pastina from around 7-8 months.
    • Protein - from 6 months: pureed meat, white fish, or well-cooked egg; lentils and chickpeas passed fine work too. Rotate sources across the week.
    • Fat - a drizzle of raw extra virgin olive oil stirred in at the end, every day.

When you introduce something new, keep the rest of the bowl familiar. It makes reactions easier to notice and the meal less overwhelming.

  4. Afternoon merenda

    around

A fruit puree, or plain whole yogurt with fruit stirred in. A few interested spoonfuls can be enough.

  5. Dinner (early evening)

    around

A lighter echo of lunch: vegetable cream with cereal, with the day's protein planned around the rest of the menu.

  6. Before bed

    around

A full milk feed and the familiar end-of-day routine.

Textures at this age

  • 6 months - everything smooth and spoonable. Purees run slowly off the spoon, no lumps.
  • 7-8 months - thicker creams and the first very soft lumps; pastina well cooked. Watch your baby's chewing movements before moving textures up.

What to avoid

No salt, no sugar, no honey before 12 months, no cow's milk as a drink before 12 months (yogurt and ricotta are fine), no whole nuts or grapes or other choking shapes. Water in small sips with meals is fine from 6 months.

Remember

If lunch ends after three spoonfuls, the day has not failed. Your baby decides how much; you decide what and when. Use this rhythm as a conversation starter with your pediatrician and shape it around the baby in front of you.
